Product: Hessian / Jute Sandbags (100% natural jute woven fabric)

Common Terms: Burlap (North America) / Hessian (Australia & UK)

Material: Natural plant fiber (jute) woven cloth

Product composition: 

Fabric - 100% jute vegetable fibre - 58-63% cellulose, 21-23% hemicellulose, 12-14-14 lignin – plain weave

Proofing chemicals – copper (ii) sulphate pentahydrate and ammonium hydroxide solution

Concentration – 5% each of chemicals (w/w)

Level of application – 1.2% as copper

Method of application – jute fabric is treated with copper sulphate and ammonium hydroxide solution in vessel known as a jigger machine. Fabric is then mangled and dried in vertical drying range

 

Minor ingredients:

Non-halogenated hydrocarbon (2%) max. And surfactant traces

Chemicals that are in list of dangerous substances:  no

Inhalation:         no specific measures to be taken

Skin contact:     no specific measures to be taken

Eye contact:      risk of irritation if fibres transferred to eyes. Irrigate eye and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

Ingestion:          harmful if swallowed

Unlikely to cause harmful effects under normal conditions of handling and use

 

Firefighting measures:

Flammability limits, none known

Use water – spray foam or carbon dioxide extinguisher

Burning jute or hessian may produce smoke, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide

 

Accidental release measures:

Not applicable

 

Handling and storage:

Store in a dry, well-ventilated area

Product should be stored away from heat, sparks or flames and wet floor

Good housekeeping should be maintained

Flash point 220 degree centigrade

 

Personal protection:

No specific measures required

Not classified as dangerous goods
