Hessian Sandbags

Hessian sandbags are heavy-duty bags made from tightly woven natural jute, used for flood protection, erosion control and slope stabilisation. Filled with sand they form strong, stackable barriers, and because they're biodegradable they won't leave plastic behind. Axon's Australian sandbags measure 84 × 36cm in a 305gsm tight weave with drawstrings, available in retail packs or bulk bales.

FAQ

1. What are hessian sandbags used for?

Flood control and water barriers, erosion control and slope stabilisation, plus construction ballast and temporary fortification. The tight jute weave holds sand firmly, and the bags are biodegradable.

2. Can hessian sandbags be used for erosion control?

Yes. As well as flood defence, they're used to build erosion barriers and stabilise slopes, batters and disturbed soil. Packed together they slow water flow and hold ground in place while vegetation establishes.

3. How many sandbags do I need for flood protection?

It depends on the length and height of barrier you need. As a rough guide, a 1 metre long, 0.3 metre high wall takes around 20 filled bags. For large-area flood or erosion work, order in bulk bales.

4. Are hessian sandbags better than plastic (poly) sandbags?

Hessian breathes, grips well when stacked, and is biodegradable, so it won't shed microplastics into waterways the way woven polypropylene can. For temporary and seasonal flood and erosion use, it's the more environmentally sound choice.

5. How long do hessian sandbags last?

They're ideal for seasonal and temporary flood and erosion work. As a natural fibre, hessian is designed to break down over time rather than persist for years — keep spares dry and filled bags are best deployed when needed.
